Description
Netsuke, ivory. Japan 19th century
Very erotic shunga netsuke depicting the fat-cheeked face of the popular Shinto deity Okame (also Otafuku) carved with voluptuous erotic spirit. The reverse includes an expertly executed removable sliding cover (as in No. 286). Legend says that she was the first to perform a nude dance in front of the secret cave of the sun goddess. Shunga netsuke were strictly forbidden in Japan and therefore secretly carved and collected. This type of netsuke was traditionally carried by men when they visited the courtesan’s quarters.
