Reuven Rubin was born in Romania in 1893. He immigrated to Israel in 1912 and settled in Jerusalem. A year after he traveled to Paris to study at cole des beaux-art. He then returned to Israel. Rubin's work sings with the joy of living in country sides drenched with sun, blossoming flowers, luscious fruits and in silver foliage of an age-old tree. Rubin identified with the biblical country of Israel, with its people and sunlit land. In his language of imagery he told us biblical parables in a magical and extraordinary way. Rubin is considered one of the most renowned and famous Israeli artists worldwide with works in collections of leading museums such as MoMA (New York), Muse d'art Moderne (Paris), Jewish Museum (New York) and others.
Rubin was 30 years old when he worked on this group of woodcuts, The Godseekers . The atmosphere throughout the various images is holy, dramatic and optimistic. The Godseekers seek God and pray to him. Rubin succeeded to evoke the spirit of life in Israel in those early days. He used the classical technique of woodcut to express his devotion to the history of art along with the new and modern spirit. This hand-made parchment portfolio no. IX/XX is a deluxe edition (the regular edition is of 65 copies). The 10 woodcuts were published by the Bineth Gallery of Fine Art, Jerusalem, in 1966, when Rubin decided to print 85 copies from the original woodblocks, engraved by him back in 1923.
The portfolio includes a preface in English and Hebrew written by Dr. Haim Gamzo, who was the director of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.
This is a significant collector's item with the finest museum qualities.
