[Many maps have contemporary hand-colored outline; others, mostly toward end of volume, are uncolored.] Folio. ¼ leather and board. “Abraham Messler’s Atlas February 14, 1816.” inked on rfep recto. Worn, spine perished, covers separated. 4 maps have loss to image (US, British Settlements, NY, NJ), several others have tear within image, some marginal losses, loss to large portion of title page. A few maps are nearly split along fold (i.e. British Possessions and NY). Creasing (esp. to folding maps). Dampstaining. Foxing. Uniform light toning. Sold with all faults. 24 (of 25) maps, mostly folding. Some variations will be observed between the cartography of the maps present here and those in the [ca. 1796] edition of “Carey's General Atlas,” Lot 300 in this auction. In this atlas, Carey’s American Atlas, most but not all maps have a number printed in margin (compare to Lot 300). See Wheat & Brun.) Howes C-135. Sabin 10855. Maps include: 1. United States. 2. British Possessions in North America. 3. Vermont. 4. New Hampshire. 5. Province of Maine. 6. Massachusetts. 7. Rhode Island. 8. Connecticut. 3rd state (with the plate number "30" added). At the far southwestern corner of the map, where Manhattan is, the three "trees" which Wheat & Brun (284) mentions are actually a courthouse symbol. That corner of the image shows a weaker impression than in Lot 300, which may indicate wear to that region of the copper engraving plate. 9. New York. 10. New Jersey. 11. Pennsylvania. 12. Delaware. 13. Maryland. 14. Virginia. 15. North-Carolina. 16. South-Carolina. 17. Georgia. 18. Kentucky. 19. Tennessee. 20. South America. 21. West-Indies. 22. A Map of the Discoveries of Captain Cook’s Clerke... 23. Plat of The Seven Ranges of Townships being Part of the Territory of the United States N. W. of the River Ohio Which by a late act of Congress are directed to be sold. 25. Louisiana.
