John Frederick Pasmore (1820-1871), 'A Harvesting Scene with Farmhands Loading a Haycart whilst a Gentleman and his Gamekeeper Watch Terriers Ratting', oil on canvas, signed and dated 1854, 36" x 48" Pasmore specialised in rustic genre and animal painting. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1842 and 1862, titles included 'The Cattleshed', 'The Farmer's Boy', and 'A Farmyard'. This painting provides a fascinating glimpse into rural life in the early Victorian period. Against the background of three enormous haystacks, the farmhands load sheaths onto the cart whilst the horse waits on patiently, apparently untroubled by the Jack Russell terriers ratting at its feet. Some of the dogs appear to be branded with the owner's initial P. Though seemingly barbaric by today's standards, the branding of dogs was not uncommon in the early to mid-19th century. The gentleman farmer who stands on admiring the sport is dressed in the fashionable man's attire of the day and provides an interesting contrast to his more rustic companions.
