DESCRIPTION: Stained glass window panel by the Zettler Studio, Munich, Germany. Depicting scene of church proceedings, with bishop, altar boy with incense, and congregation. Marked in glass in the upper right corner "Made Zettler Munich Germany". Mounted in a custom wooden frame, with wiring for lighting. Franz Xavier Zettler (German, 1841-1916) graduated from the Munich Art Academy and in 1863 began working for the Franz Mayer Company as a glass painter. He married Mayer's daughter and then founded his own company F.X. Zettler, taking over Mayer's stained glass production. The two split after Zettler established his own sales force and the two companies competed until 1939 when they joined back together. Zettler and Mayer became know for developing the "Munich style" of stained glass which involved expert painting on large glass panels as opposed to the medieval technique of small pieces of colored glass held in a leaded framework. PROVENANCE: Per consignor, it was brought home by the consignor's father from a ruined church during WWII. MEASUREMENTS: 26-3/4" x 16-3/4". Overall with framing 37-1/4" x 27-1/4" x 4-3/4" deep. CONDITION: Cracks in three sections on the altar boy, three sections on the bishop, and two sections in the lower right corner. Wear to surface of leading throughout. Glass and leading undulating from age. Light wear to frame, and some issues with wiring.
