Louis (Lewis) Henry Meakin (Cincinnati, Ohio, 1850-1917) 24" x 36" oil on canvas, titled "The Riffle". Signed lower left "L.H. Meakin". Also penciled on back stretcher "The Riffle, L.H. Meakin #25 Art Museum, Cincinnati, Ohio". Lewis Henry Meakin was a skilled painter of landscapes of scenes along the Ohio River and during the summers at Gloucester and Cape Ann, Massachusetts. Artist George Bellow called him "one of the best landscape painters in America". He studied in Cincinnati with Artists Frank Duveneck and John Twachtman. For 40 years Meakin was a teacher at the Cincinnati Art Academy and was also curator of the Cincinnati Museum. Well listed artist. This is a great painting of a Cincinnati scene. Very very slight crazing on lower right only and one pinhead size flake. Fine condition in original frame. EST. $3000. - $6000.
