Portrait of Armistead Lewis BurwellOil on CanvasUnsigned by Artist19th Century, American29 1/2" H x 24 1/2" W, Frame 36" H x 31" WThree-quarter portrait of Armistead Lewis Burwell against a muted background. Burwell dressed in two button frock coat with high stand collar shirt and cravat. 20th century gilt wood and composition frame. Original canvas adhered to new canvas and stretcher. Cracklature and surface lost from original stretcher evident in right angle above Burwell’s head. Restored and repaired.Writing on verso, (more than likely at time of restoring):Amistead Lewis Burwell“Waverly” Franklin County, Virginia” Born April 10, 1810Died April 20, 1883Armistead Lewis Burwell was born in 1810, d.1883 in Franklin County, Virginia. He was one of 12 children born to John Spotswood Burwell (b. 1776 – d. 1884) and Elizabeth Middleton Woods (b. 1790 – d. 1863). His grandfather was Colonel Lewis Armistead Burwell (b. 1745 – d. 1800) of Stoneland Plantation in Mecklenburg Co., Virginia. The Burwell family is noted as one of the “First Families of Virginia in the Colony of Virginia” and within the early generations has had historical and political impact on the stateProvenance: Portrait has descended in the Burwell family.
