The writer Paul Verlaine (1844-1896). 1896. Albumen print. 12,2 x 17 cm. Flush-mounted to original studio board (traces of use) with photographer's name, address 34, rue d'Gassendi,Paris printed below image on the mount, annotated in black ink and marks in pencil on mount verso.
This image is from the series Nos contemporains chez eux, taken the year of Verlaine's death by the noted nineteenth century photographer Dornac, who specialized in portraits of writers, artists and actors. A print of this image is in the collection of the Bibliothèque nationale de France and is stamp-dated 1896. It shows the melancholic Verlaine at the end of his life with his ever-present glass of absinthe in a café he often frequented. - Some surface spots and a few pinholes in upper left edge as well as small glued tear in left edge, otherwise in good condition.
