Item Details
Description
American (New Brunswick, New Jersey), circa 1800. Fine Federal eagle-inlaid and figured mahogany wood tall case clock, attributed to Matthew Egerton Jr. (active circa. 1785–1837). Hood of clock with molded swan's neck crest ending in brass metal caps decorated with thistles surmounted by three brass ball and steeple form finials. Tympanum inlaid with oval medallions with leaf motif. Arched glazed hinged door below opening to white painted dial with seconds register and date mechanism. Upper portion hand painted with hot air balloon. Waisted case with shaped hinged door inlaid with eagle, shield and stars. Clock case raised on splayed bracket feet. Height 97.5", width 18.25", depth 9". Provenance: James H. Stephens, Cloister, New Jersey to John H. Stephens to James H. Stephens III, to Marion Stephens, Cloister, New Jersey to John S. Walton, 1950 to Joseph Marcus, Ebenzer Alden House, Union, Maine to Sotheby's New York whereby acquired by Mrs. Dorothy Edwards, Atlanta, Georgia.
Literature: "Antiques", July 1990 shown in front hallway of Ebenezer Alden House, Union, Maine, p. 136. Note: The image of the hot air balloon found on the clock's dial may commemorate the first balloon ascent in America. In 1793, Jean-Pierre Blanchard made the first hot air balloon trip in the US. The trip took off from Philadelphia, PA and ended in Trenton, New Jersey. The event was viewed by many and spurred a ballooning fad among the social and economic elite. A clock nearly identical to this lot can be found in the Diplomatic Reception Room of the Department of State in Washington D.C. Provenance: From the Collection of Mrs. Dorothy Edwards, Atlanta, Georgia.
