Item Details
Description
We are very pleased to present this gorgeous pair of tall matching sage green, 7.5 inch nominal collar base flared vases, plus a great 5 inch tall tapered bud vase, all by Josiah Wedgwood. The large 7.5 inch nominal pair is a Scarce collar based & flared pattern, both featuring that which Wedgwood calls the Sacrifice Figures. This style features Greek mythological figures, a cherub and the sacrificial fire. Produced between the mid 1950s and the 1960s, these are a valuable & highly prized collectible. The 5 inch bud vase carries the mythological The Muses Watering Pegasus, and was also produced in the 1950s-1960s. They are impressed Wedgwood, Mfg. in England, and the overall dimensions are 5 x 5 x 7.5 & 5.25 x 5.25 x 7.375, while the bud vase is 3 x 3 x 5 inches tall. The condition is excellent, and the total weight is 4# 7 oz. xxxxxxxxxxx. The term Jasper was coined by Josiah Wedgwood, as it reminded him of the resemblance to that type of semi-precious quartz.Although Jasperware was invented by Josiah Wedgwood in 1775, the original solid cameo style formula was much to expensive & time consuming to survive. After 2 years of failures to achieve the consistency desired, in 1777, the first Jasper Dip colors were introduced, whereby the color was applied over the base white clay prior to firing. After firing, the classic hand carved bas-relief Ivory white mythological figures were applied. Shortly thereafter, a number of other English firms attempted to ride the coattails of the highly prized granular satin & virgin white porcelain relief decorative wares. In the early through mid-19th century, Wm. Adams produced a line of Jasperware that was quite ornate, but the colors varied from those of Wedgwood. Legend has it that for a very short time prior to 1800, that Humphrey Palmer of the Church Works, Hanley (1760 – 1778), then Neale & Palmer (1769 – 1778), and finally James Neale & Co. until 1786, produced fine yet distinguishable Jasperware, Wedgwood type Cream ware, and Black Basalts formulas. The Dudson family of Hanley, Staffordshire may also have entered the fray, but there is no positive proof that James Dudson of the Hope & Hanover St. Potteries (1838 – 1888) ever produced Jasperware. The subsequent firms of J.T. Dudson (1888 – 1898), and Dudson Bros. Ltd. (1898 - ) indeed offered Jasperware in their arsenal, but once again the Wedgwood molded applied classical figurines and base colors will invariably differentiate the companies.
