In the U.S., the meaning of the word evolved during colonial times to mean a small wooden bucket with a lid and handle that was used to store butter (covered with brine to keep it from going rancid), lard, soap, sugar (which would have been a sugarloaf), beer and even nails. The size varied, but many are about 10" tall and 10" in diameter.
