The production started in 1838, and over the years, the ownership graduated from August Bauscher (later co-founder of Bauscher / Weiden), to the stewardship of Karl G. Mezger. Taking a partner In 1891, the company traded under the name Muther & Mezger OHG / Porzellanfabrik Tirschenreuth until being taken over by Lorenz Hutschenreuther AG from Selb, Bavaria in late 1927. The china factory Tirschenreuth was carried on from 1927 as a subsidiary of Hutschenreuther, surviving WW II, until economic conditions forced closure of the factory in 1994. Little is known of Tirschenreuth before the 13th century, when the town was designated a possession of the Cistercian Abbey of Waldsassen. The monks of Waldsassen were in charge of a large basilica church and Tirschenreuth provided the monks with taxes and tithes. Because the Holy Roman Empire was so politically scattered, Waldsassen remained an independent protectorate for several centuries. This was common during the middle Ages, when small towns were controlled either by established nobles or by appointed clergy.Until the 19th century, the Holy Roman Empire was a disordered league of German-speaking principalities and city-states, which made Central Europe vulnerable to attack and manipulation. As the Empire solidified and became the German Confederation, Tirschenreuth was absorbed and became an imperial possession. This occurred early in the unification process, in 1803. The traditionally Catholic legal code that ruled Tirschenreuth was secularized. Although Tirschenreuth was small, it became a notable industrial village, producing a variety of products. Tirschenreuth's most notable export was porcelain, and the town's unique porcelain wares remain valuable today. xxxxxxxxxxxx. L Straus & Sons (LS&S) Lazarus Straus came to America in 1854. After finding work as a pushcart peddler, and settled In Talbotton, Ga. soon moving to Columbus, Ga. After the burning of Columbus by Union forces in the Civil War, anti-Jewish sentiment ran so high that Lazarus moved his family to Philadelphia in 1865, then to New York in 1866. Prior to the war, Straus has purchased crockery from a Cauldwell Crockery Co., and upon settling in New York, proceeded to buy Cauldwell in 1866. In 1869, the Helbing & Straus Co. of San Francisco (Lazarus brother Emanuel) contracted Lazarus to purchase for them in the Eastern Market. At that moment Lazarus Straus & Son, Importers of Crockery was born. Originally located at 161 Chambers St., the business had moved to 44 Warren St in 1869. Expansion was so rapid that Straus also acquired # 42, 46, & 48 on Warren St by 1886, and added 116 Chambers St to all the rest in 1895. In 1874 Nathan Straus (Lazarus' son) convinced the company RH Macy to permit the Straus firm to have a small glass & china ware department in their store, the first china and glassware to be sold by Macy's. In 1924 the firm name was changed to Nathan Straus & Co., and remained unchanged until closing in the 1930s. The company made and imported porcelain and glassware from Europe including England, France, Germany, and Austria. L Straus & Sons had factories or offices in London, Paris, Limoges, Rudolstadt, Kamenicky Senov, and Karlovy Vary. The Karlovy Vary operation was a porcelain factory in Stara Role, Altrohlau, Bohemia, Austria while Kamenicky Senov was a glass factory. LS&S purchased porcelain from several European factories including both Moritz Zdekhauer and Oscar & Edgar Gutherz in Stara Role (Altrohlau). LS&S also established a porcelain decorating studio in Limoges, France sometime after 1900.
