Condition/Details: Bound in its original or period blindstamped leather boards with raised bands and gilt embossing, this antique text is a scarce title and is printed "together with the 'Song of the Three Children' paraphrased." Bound in the rear as a 29-page appendix, is "The Ladies Defence: or, the Bride-Woman's Counsellor Answered: a poem in a dialogue between Sir John Brute, Sir Wm. Loveall, Melissa, and a Parson." (also dated 1709). Lady Chudleigh (1656-1710) was a devout Anglican who educated herself and, ahead of her time, challenged traditional gender roles making her perhaps the first credited feminist. The volume shows some external age/wear, and has a detached front board, secure rear board, the pages are bright with some toning to the titlepage. The book measures approximately 4.75" x 7.5" and contains a 3-page publisher's catalog at the rear. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $4.50
