Newell Convers Wyeth (1882-1945), Attributed to, A Study for Custer's Last Stand, oil on board, 46 1/4" x 48" (oval top), unsigned. Small punctures to board at top and bottom center, minor loss to edge at bottom left, otherwise good condition. In a wooden maple frame with oval top measuring 54" x 55 1/2". This painting may be an early study for an illustration by Wyeth commissioned by Lucky Strike cigarettes. See The Magazine Antiques for November 2003, page 141, for a photograph of the completed illustration. Also see the inside front cover for the December 1932 edition of Photoplay magazine. Wyeth's finished version of this illustration was in a square format, with the Indian figure at the upper right complete and certain details (e.g. the buttons on Custer's coat) added to the composition.
