Description

A rare brocaded silk robe à la Piémontaise, 1770s, the silk woven with delicate foliate stripes, the bodice with tabbed front hem, trimmed in tufted pink, brown, green and gold fly braid, with padded, ruched bands to the front skirt openings, pleated drape falling desending over the fourreau back and culminating in polonaised skirt drapes, two silk covered buttons to the rear waist, bust approx 92cm, 36in

Condition

Silk is fresh, colourful and lustrous generally. The sleeves have been altered/widened. There are alterations to the front waist area of the bodice. The silk lining is missing from the lower part of the skirt, there are a couple of tiny moth holes in the silk skirt. Lacking engageants. It is an unusually large size. Lacking silk lining from skirt hem. Left rear skirt near hem is a cluster of faint brown stains which are not immediately noticeable. General appearance is clean and good. Please note: in the printed catalogue, the robe is illustrated with lot 25, the petticoat.
