BEADED TAIL BAG. Late 19th Century. Ex B

BEADED TAIL BAG. Late 19th Century. Ex Bruce Van Landingham as Apache, distinctively Ute in form and style. A picture of Chipeta taken in 1870 shows an exceptionally similar bag. The characteristic tail bag is influenced by the allied Jicarilla Apache. Chipeta herself, a Kiowa/Apache married Chief Ouray who was Ute/Apache. This rare classic bag has the unusual color palette favored by Utes in the latter part of the 19th Century. Rose 'white heart', red 'white heart', black, white and the blue favored by the Ute, along with old yellow, make a striking artistic statement. Fringe below dangles missing. 19"l.
