Much of his important career was before the Civil War. He served in the Mexican War, had a political career in California. Appointed Commissioner of Indian Affairs in 1857, became Governor of the Territory of Kansas (that then included Colorado.) The city of Denver was named for him. Again Commissioner of Indian Affairs 1858 – 59. Brigadier General in the Union Army, 1861 – 63. Knees-up portrait by Brady, published by Anthony. Top and bottom of the mount trimmed. [3]
