b) The poet Alphonse Lamartine, by Alexandre Martin, Paris. Mount trimmed at top and bottom edges. [3]. c) Charles Augustin Saint-Beuve, the "father of modern literary criticism." Actually the most rare of this group. Saint-Beuve's criticism used the biography of the author to explain literary works.
