Lot 134 save

"Chief Joseph" by E.H. Latham, 1903

Sign In to see what this sold for

His actual name was "Hin-mah-too-yah-lat-kekt," – "Thunder Rising Over the Mountains, From the Water." This is the iconic portrait of the chief, from the reservation period. Joseph died the following year. This is the print that his friend and interpreter Ada Stillwell Dickson shared with family and acquaintances during her 90 years.[See Lot 131 for background.] A copy is in the collection of the U. of Washington Library, but this is not something seen in public offerings. Ink notation by Latham on verso; his signature and date on right, recto. 8 1/4" x 6 1/4" gelatin silver print, well worn, with portions of the bottom and top, especially top left, torn off. Fortunately, the portion with Joseph's figure and Latham's signature are rich and clear. [D3]
