8 ¼" x 6 ¼" gelatin silver print ca. 1903 by E. H. Latham. Pen inscription on verso by Latham, "Man of Authority at the School." Further identification in the same hand but different pen: "Willie Andrews." Later pencil inscription by Ada Stillwell Dickson: "circles on skirt are mirrors." Note: Another Latham portrait of Andrews and his wife in the Lewis & Clark College Library in Portland is misidentified as "Nicky Mowitz with His Wife" and incorrectly dated 1920. However that portrait was inscribed "To my Tillicum Ada Stillwell Dickson." [Tillicum" is a sahaptian term of endearment.] Ada later resided in Portland, and this personal copy must have been given to someone there.
This is a fine family portrait with lots of detail. They stand on two Pendleton woolen blankets. Trivial tear at extreme lower right corner. [D3+] See Lot 131 for background.
