35 postcards, with annotations. 27 are real photo postcards, most with Azo "place stamp here" stamp boxes. Many have annotations, and the collection includes, in addition, lists of the ships convoyed by the S. Dakota in this period, along with how many knots she steamed, plus some letters and other material.
The principal subjects include the officers posing high above Rio de Janeiro; 2 sailors with a Brazilian boy --'the black diamond of Bahia'; Crowd in Montivideo watching as Admiral Caperton marches by; the band and marines from several ships marching, in Montivideo; Marines marching in formation; "a bunch of electricians posed on the U.S.S. Ess Dee [South Dakota]; "Conant and his squad at Pelham"; "Sending light field guns ashore with landing party at Guatamala"; Formation on parade grounds; horse-drawn carriage, sailors; Argentine Cruiser 'Buenos Aeres' "escort to U.S. Squadron"; "Montivideo's welcome to U.S. Sailors"; "Marines of the U.S. Ess Dee" [on deck], and other views.
