35 postcards, with annotations. 27 are real photo postcards, most with Azo "place stamp here" stamp boxes. Many have annotations, and the collection includes, in addition, lists of the ships convoyed by the S. Dakota in this period, along with how many knots she steamed, plus some letters and other material.

The principal subjects include the officers posing high above Rio de Janeiro; 2 sailors with a Brazilian boy --'the black diamond of Bahia'; Crowd in Montivideo watching as Admiral Caperton marches by; the band and marines from several ships marching, in Montivideo; Marines marching in formation; "a bunch of electricians posed on the U.S.S.
