Early Engraved Powder Flask for Wheel-Lock Musket, probably of Germanic origin, body is a rectangular section wood curved into an arc and fitted with iron mounts. Obverse with engraved depiction of two medieval warriors bearing shields and swords engaged in battle. Verso with three series of concentric circles. Both sides of flask with voluted patterns and incised regimental lines. The nozzle, spring cap and belt hook are unadorned. [See Houze, 1989: 68-69].
Condition reportIron mounts are ca 17th century, the engraving is also ca 17th century. Nozzle is partially loose. Three dings on one side of the flask. Obverse with a fragment of wood discolored between the two shields.
