Presentation Grade Militia Officer's Sword, ca 1845. Manufactured by N.P. Ames Co. Springfield, MA. 31.25" blade with blood fuller on both sides of blade in the center. Fancy etched panels on both sides of blade. Brass gold gilded cross guard, brass handle with silver plating, brass knight's head with gold gilt, and brass chain running from guard to knight's helmet. Sheath is composed of brass and gold gilt. Sheath with patriotic eagle and stylized lightning bolts. [See Hamilton; 1994, p.76].
Condition reportBlade has been lightly cleaned with some type of chemical leaving a grey look to the metal. Otherwise the blade is sharp and etched panels are legible. Right side of sheath at bottom has a dent. Four dents on left side of scabbard. Scabbard still retains traces of gold gilt. Overall a very sharp and attractive militia sword.
