Leather Volunteer Militia Bell Crown Shako, ca 1821-1832. Highly-polished black jacked leather hat complete with brass overlapping scales along the brim secured by two matching brass buttons with eagle in relief. Large die-struck brass hat plate embossed with a spread-wing eagle shown clutching a patriotic shield in its talons. Background of a shield with military themes such as cannons, rifles, swords, horns, cannonballs, and two draped banners; shield encompassed in a stippled outlined border. The rear of the cap is slightly pointed over the nape of the neck. Underside of visor painted green. Interior complete with worn brown leather sweatband and vestige of white glazed cotton liner. Condition reportSome of the leather along crown is severed, two areas of the top of hat appear to have replaced leather swatches, VG+.
