William Henry Buck (American/New Orleans, 1840-1888) , "Black Men Fishing Along the Bayou", oil on canvas, signed lower right, 18 in. x 30 in., in a period giltwood frame. Note: After the Civil War, a Louisiana landscape tradition was developed and led by talented artists Richard Clague and William Henry Buck. The bayous, swamps and cabin scenes provided an endless source of inspiration for these artists. In this painting, William Buck painted a glimpse of plantation life along the bayous of Southern Louisiana. Three African-American men have gathered by a raised pier at the banks of the river to fish. On the shore the plantation has been fenced in and several buildings including the barn and possibly the overseer’s cabin are depicted. A wonderful colorist, Buck has accurately depicted the indigenous flora and fauna of the area.
