Description
John Kelly Fitzpatrick (American/Alabama, 1888 -1953) impressionist oil on canvas landscape depicting barns bordered by trees. Signed lower right and dated "1939". Presentation label en verso reads "To Mrs. Elizabeth Moore with love and appreciation from Alabama MU of ΣAE, 1959". Sight: 24 1/2" H x 29" W. Framed: 29 1/4" H x 34" W. Biography (courtesy Askart: The Artists' Bluebook): Alabama-born John Kelly Fitzpatrick studied at the Art Institute of Chicago before enlisting in the Army in 1918. He was wounded and severely scarred during the war and returned to painting, attending the Academie Julian in Paris. Once back in the South, he made numerous contributions to the arts in Alabama. He was the first director of the Montgomery Museum of Art School and taught at the Dixie Art Colony at Lake Jordan. In 1930 he became a founding member of the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts and was active in many organizations. Note: this painting is pictured in a photograph of Fitzpatrick with his work, used by the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts in their website biography of the artist. Provenance: acquired from a Chickamauga, Tennessee estate.
Condition
Approx. 1/2" tear upper margin. Restoration/inpainting to upper barn/sky area and ravine. Some older minor areas of restoration evident under black light examination. Light overall grime.
