Description
Charles Alexander Burnett (1769-1849, Alexandria, Virginia / Georgetown, District of Columbia) Federal coin silver tea and coffee service. The six-piece service includes coffee pot, tea pot, sugar bowl, waste bowl, creamer, and sugar tongs, all in the Neoclassical style, with the five hollowware pieces having a rectangular form, gadroon and trellis borders, urn finials and stepped pedestal bases; the pots with angular handles with bone ferrules and the sugar bowl with C-scroll handles, the tongs with shell form grips, bright cut bell flowers and borders on the handles. All items except for waste bowl are stamped C.A. BURNETT in rectangle, the waste bowl is unmarked. All pieces except the tongs are engraved with script monogram ACK(H?); tongs have script monogram HPA. Circa 1810. Coffee pot: 8 1/8" H, tea pot: 8 5/8" H, covered sugar: 8 1/2" H, creamer: 6 3/8" H, waste bowl: 5" L, tongs: 6 1/4" L. 113.585 oz troy total. Charles Burnett was one of the Federal period's most prominent and prolific silversmiths. He was active in Fredericksburg from 1788-1793 and Alexandria from 1793 to 1796. From 1801-1806 he was in partnership with John E. Rigden in Georgetown. Burnett continued the shop in Georgetown on his own until about 1840, and he died in 1849. He counted a number of Washington, D.C. area politicians among his patrons, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Henry Clay.
