(BRITISH 1742-1821) MRS. TICKELL" Inscribed "Cosway" verso, oil on copper, oval 6 7/8 x 5 7/8 in. (17.5 x 14.9cm) within a red leather folder PROVENANCE: From the Collection of D. Virginia Armentrout (nee Roosevelt) of Ambler, Pennsylvania. note: This lot is accompanied by a photo certificate inscribed verso: "'Mrs Tickell' By 'Richard Cosway, Ra' (sic) (1742-1821) on copper 7+6 in. This beautiful portrait in oils on copper represents Mary, second daughter of Thomas Linley the actor. She was born in Bath about 1756, and appeared at the Three Choirs Musical Festival at Hereford in 1771, and in 1772 at Gloucester with her more celebrated sister, Mrs. R. B. Sheridan. She married July 25, 1780, Richard Tickell (grandson of Addison's friend), one of the commissioners of Stamp Duties, an author of pamphlets and dramatic pieces (his second wife Miss Ley, was painted many times by Romney). She died at Clifton on July 27, 1787. She appears with her sister in the ***** group by Thomas Gainsborough now in the Dulwich Gallery, she is sitting on the bank and holding a piece of music. There is another portrait of Mrs. Tickell by R. Cosway, a whole length walking on a garden terrace well known from the beautiful stipple engraving by J. Conde published in 1791, four years after her death. London Dec. 27, 1927 M. Roberts"" Condition report Very minor retouching to nostril on right and line of mouth on right, Possibly overcleaned bottom right in background. Generally appears to be in good to very good condition.
