Beryl Cook (1926-2008) had no formal training and did not start painting until her middle age, but her playful and bold creations have captured the hearts of many and her original paintings have reached $24 000 at Bonhams and Christie's. 
Of this painting Beryl Cook had said: "A well-known art magazine asked me to paint a suitable picture for the cover of their anniversary edition, celebrating either 20 or 25 years of publication I think. I’m not sure exactly what they had in mind but it probably wasn’t these three women who are attacking the excellent cake with undisguised relish. There does seem to be rather a lot of cake to go round, but they look like they have never suffered from any lack of appetite so I expect they will manage."
