Frederic Remington
1861-1909 Hole in the Day, 1905/06-1908 Signed Frederic Remington and dated 1908 (lr); inscribed as titled (ll) Oil on canvas mounted on board 12 x 18 inches Provenance: Sale, Parke-Bernet Galleries, Inc., New York, 1964, as Hope in the Day Literature: Peter H. Hassrick, Melissa J. Webster, Frederic Remington, A Catalogue Raisonne of Paintings, Watercolors and Drawings, Cody, Wyoming, 1996, Vol. II, no. 2752, p. 797, illustrated, as Hole in the Day According to the catalogue raisonne, "The Parke-Bernet catalogue titles this work Hope in the Day, and says the painting is inscribed with a 1908 date. It is the same image as that in Knoedler's records which is titled, Hole in the Day. Remington copyrighted a painting with this latter title in January 1906, and the medium, dimensions and description match those of Hope in the Day. As he did with Pool in the Desert, 1907-1908, and On the Southern Plains, 1907-1908, perhaps Remington reworked the painting in 1908." Condition reportCondition: Frame rubbing. Scattered inpainting along the edges. 3/4 inch area of inpainting at far upper left center. No further apparent restoration. Dulling varnish.
