Description
LARGE SIKHOTE-ALIN METEORITE
Iron, coarse octahedrite
Paseka, Primorskiy Kray, Siberia, Russia
This is a large and fine specimen of the famed Sikhote-Alin fall that caused an explosion in the morning skies over Siberia in early 1947. It is particularly notable for the pronounced regmaglypts that cover its surface, small crater-like impressions formed by ablation of troilite as the meteorite hurtled through the atmosphere, reaching immense molten temperatures. The large meteorite body of Sikhote-Alin broke up twice during its fall to Earth, with only the higher beak-up resulting in specimens with this fascinating surface texture; the lower break-up produced the familiar shrapnel-like fragments. A fine, large, and comparatively rare example of this celebrated fall, it measures approximately 10 x 5 x 3 inches and weighs just over 8 kg.
