Original Signed “Artist Proof”, “R E Byrd,” in rich black fountain pen, no date or location, 9.5” x 7”, Choice Extremely Fine. The notation on the die proof reads, "To King Hostick with high regard and admiration - R.E. Byrd." (Hostick was a noted Illinois manuscript dealer). The image, by Walter Tittle, also bears Byrd's facsimile signature along the bottom border. A well-preserved superior quality portrait, signed by the man who did more than any other person to direct the exploration of the bleak, frozen continent of Antarctica. The sunk into card has been elaborately matted with a biographical plaque, then richly framed to total dimensions of 29.5” x 18.25”". Beautifully famed (likely costing the estimate for the item inside) and ready for hanging on display.
