Description
American School, "Portrait of a Gentleman with a Pearl Stickpin," mid 19th c., oil on canvas, presented in a period gilt and gesso frame, H.- 35 1/4 in., W.- 27 1/4 in. Provenance: Cedar Grove Historic House, Vicksburg, MS.
Condition
Condition consistent with age and use. Moderate craquelure observed throughout. Faint stretcher marks visible. Slight losses noted on the right edge, possible due to rubbing. Canvas has been relined, with the original canvas showing expected age and wear. Inpainting is observed throughout the painting, with large areas observed in the background, especially in the top left corner and to the right of the figure’s head. Strokes are observed in the face, hair, and hands of the figure. A 6 inch horizontal line of inpainting is observed near the top, possibly along the stretcher seam. Inpainting is also noted along the top and right edges. A striking example.
