Description
engraving after François Louis Joseph Watteau, c.1784, Paris, Chez Le Noir, 490 x 620mm. (19 1/4 x 24 3/8 in), unframed. Louis Joseph de Montcalm-Gozon (1712-1759) was the controversial commander of French forces in North America in the Seven Years' War against the British. Having stoutly defended Quebec against several onslaughts from the British, Montcalm-Gozon opted for open battle on the Plains of Abraham. This proved disastrous, culminating in his own mortal wounding while in retreat. As the legend on this plate describes, he was buried at his request in a bomb crater, not knowing that General Wolfe, commanding the British troops, had already died in the same engagement.
