This Unique item measures approx. 12''W x 9''L. Edwin Willard Deming grew up in Illinois near the Fox River and old Sauk Reservation. His interests in the ''Vanishing American Frontier'' led him to travel among numerous tribes from the Hudson Bay area to southern Mexico to make sketches and photographs. For a time, he lived with tribes, such as the Pawnees, Poncas, Tonkaswas and Otos in the Oklahoma Territory, as well as in the encampment of Sitting Bull just previous to the Battle of Wounded Knee. A chief named, White Calf of the Blackfoot Tribe, actually adopted him as his son. When he was in Arizona, he stayed with the Apaches and Navajos. Known as a painter, Deming also created small sculptures between 1905 and 1910, painted eight murals, which are housed in the American Natural History Museum in New York, and he illustrated books. Edwin Deming died in 1942 in New York City. His artwork is included in collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum of Art, the National Gallery, Montclair Art Museum, New York, American Natural History Museum and the Amon Carter Museum of Western Art, Fort Worth, Texas.
