Description
American Carved Mahogany Silver Chest, early 20th century, possibly by Berkey and Gay, Grand Rapids, Michigan, the canted rectangular top above a fruit- and laurel-carved frieze, over a case fitted with two doors, each inset with a scrolling and floral-modeled pierced iron panel over fabric, opening to an interior fitted with shelves and four drawers, raised above a shaped frieze centered by carved boars, on cabriole legs joined by an X-form stretcher and ending in scrolled toes, h. 63", w. 41", d. 23".
Condition
In overall good condition. The finish appears to be original, with normal minor mars, wear and abrasions consistent with age and use. The top exhibits a few narrow veneer losses, the largest being about 1/2" by 5" loose veneer, and water stains. Upholstery behind the door grates is somewhat faded and worn. Some wrought iron leaves and tendrils may have been re-struck. The door retains functional lock and key. Both side panels on the case exhibit vertical shrinkage cracks, more acute on one side than the other.
