Item Details
Description
William IV Mahogany Breakfront Bookcase, second quarter 19th century, the molded cornice with an applied drop-finial frieze above four astragal-glazed doors, over a central drop-front secretary drawer opening to a variety of cubbyholes, over two paneled cupboard doors, flanked to either side by a single paneled cupboard, raised on a molded base on ebonized ball feet, h. 103-1/2", w. 98-1/2", d. 22-1/2".
Condition
In "as found" condition. The frieze of the crown is lacking six of the applied drop acorns. There is scattered veneer damage to the frieze as well. A short strip of molding is gone to the top of the left side where the top and side of the case meet. There are strips of molding off but present to left and right base cabinets (just below the doors). One of those pieces is too short to fill the span. Scattered shrinkage cracks from age. The interior shelves of the top sections have been replaced with glass shelves and florescent lighting added to each section. There is old damage to some of the mullion strips to the center doors. Retains a good, rich surface and patina. Locks in two interior drawers are replaced. The knobs and latching hardware on the upper drawers appear to be 19th century additions.
