Item Details
Description

Built in June 1957, this car was manufactured for the export market to the USA. Repatriated in 1989 by St. Albans based jeweller, Chris Wharton, the car was re-registered in the UK in 1990 as ‘XSU 681' as retained now. This car was chosen by Mr Wharton from the twenty-something viewed as it was virtually rust-free with the original paintwork still on the chassis.

J.A. Coachworks of Nottingham were recommended by the J.D.C as one of the best workshops to complete the complete renovation as required so were immediately recruited to conclude a complete rebuild plus left to righthand drive conversion of the car for use on these shores. Many invoices and copies of correspondence, plus a host of photographs accompany this car to track the stages of the complete restoration. Messrs Douthwaite & Roughton of Coventry were again recommended by the J.D.C so they were instructed to trim the beautiful red leather hide interior which adorns this car, their work being commendable. A photographic record of restorative works with some bills, specifications and various correspondences are available to view with this car.

Rob Beere Engineering of Cheshire rebuilt the engine to an exceptionally high standard and 8.65:1 compression ratio as original to this car. A letter in the history file from Mr Wharton exclaims that he was ‘delighted' with the engine, whilst a full engine specification sheet and RB Engineering warranty accompanied the car when completed in 1990. It is still in good order today starting readily and behaving itself as you would expect.

Post-renovation in 1990 and to the period when our vendor acquired the car in 1994 just 5,000 dry miles had been travelled and the car was correctly stored in an air-conditioned garage. At time of registration in 1990 the car showed 84,505 miles, by 1995 this had risen to just 89,315, and now shows just 94,874 believed genuine miles. Be under no illusion that this is a fine and usable, not concours, example but one which needs make no apology being as it is a handsome car in great colours and a great driving car. The recipient of recent checks and expenditure to make sure the car is all up on its toes for sale, this is a car ready for immediate use.
