Description
The Alvis 12/70 was first introduced in 1937 as a sports saloon and a 4 seater drophead coupe. There were only 741 made - all with 1842cc over head valve engines that featured an aluminium alloy block and a 3 bearing crankshaft. In standard form the engine gave 63.5bhp which was powerful for the time and the chassis was highly respected for handling and balance. As a result a lot of cars were rebodied in period with a sports racing body and then raced which is exactly what happened to this particular car. It has been re-engineered with a 6 cylinder Alvis Silver Crest OHV 2763cc engine and a home designed body.
This car has been significantly campaigned in National hillclimbs and International races since 2007 by the much respected late Robin Everall, a prolific VSCC driver member. Well known to the club and also to the vintage racing community at large, the car has been highly successful from day 1 and featured in many significant and high profile events.
The extensive history file tells the story of a great deal of time and attention and monies spent on regular and detailed work and updates. It has won at Mallory Park, Silverstone and Prescott as well as being a member of the winning team at the 2 hour sports car relay race at Donington in 2008. In 2009 it won the 'Ruth Holbert Memorial Trophy', the top Alvis racing award, with a record number of championship points and in 2010 it was the recipient of the'Silver Con-Rod Trophy' for the best presented car by the VSCC.
The body was designed and built by the late Robin Everall himself who lists the complete specification of the whole car in the comprehensive history file, which includes all race results. There is also a complete photographic record of the build of the car throughout. He has even left instructions on both how to start and how best to run the car in various different types of competition!
More recently fettled and maintained by our collector vendor, the car is now ready to race and win once more. A rare and exciting car built on a no expense spared basis with outstanding attention to detail.
Sold with a comprehensive spares package too long to list but including 2 spare wheels, 4 Blockley tyres, 2 front axles, 2 rear axles, 2 diffs and 4 halfshafts etc.
