RUSSIAN ICON of INTERCESSION. Circa 1890s. Hand painted. Size: 9 by 10.5". Very good condition. Authenticity guaranteed. Certificate of the Authenticity available upon request. This type combines two subjects whose celebration falls on October 1st - the vision of the Mother of God to the Holy Foot Andrie and Romanos the Melodist who could not sing well until the Mother of God appeared to him in a dream and gave him a scroll to eat. The Mother of God is seen standing on a cloud in the air within the Church. Angels and Saints including Peter, Paul and John the Baptist flank her. Below at center is Romanos. On the left Andrie points toward the Mother of God, showing her to his disciple Epiphany. On the right the Emperor and Empress. The title below reading "Image of the Pokrov Most Holy Mother of God".
