"Lake in the Catskills" , an important luminist Hudson River School painting by Maximilien E. Sand.Sand studied and exhibited at the prestigious Brooklyn Art Association in 1875-1876, then traveled to Europe as did many expatriate American artists in the 19th century, painting in France and Switzerland. Upon his return to America, he resumed exhibiting at the Brooklyn A.A. from 1883 through 1886. This is his first major luminist Hudson River work to be auctioned in many years. It is an oil on canvas laid on board, and measuring 22"h x 36"l.
