DESCRIPTION: This is a pilgrim century walnut heavily carved stool from New England circa 1600's. Pilgrim century or Jacobean is the furniture of the time of the Mayflower and was popular in England and America from 1604 to 1700. Pilgrim Century was the first furniture brought to America and the first to be made in this country. Pilgrim century furniture is known for its simplicity that is straight and rectangular with low lines. Its construction and craftsmanship was known for quality and craftsmanship. The design features of pilgrim century furniture include carvings, spiral and turned stretchers and straight and turned legs. Decorative carvings were acorns, crowns, roses, acanthus leaves, Flemish and floral scrolls, diamonds, and lozenge. The pilgrim century stool has a finely carved decorated top with a beveled carved edge. There is a finely turned central stretcher bar that supports four carved blocked and turned legs. The pilgrim century stool is held together by peg construction and is solid and sturdy.
