DESCRIPTION: This is a rare Moravian large redware decorated bowl from Pennsylvania, circa 1700s. Moravia occupies most of the eastern part of the Czech Republic and the Moravian Church was a Protestant Outgrowth from the Catholic Church. Members of the Moravian Community purchased a 500 acre tract of land north of Philadelphia in 1741 along the Lehigh River and established their communal society. The mission was established on Christmas Eve, and was named Bethlehem, after the Biblical town in Judea. The Moravian redware bowl was used for milk and separation. The Moravian redware bowl has rainbow colors, and the base is a slip glaze of pumpkin orange over red Pennsylvania earthenware clay. The Colors and slip glazes were applied in a spatter design using a flow style as well as a drip style. The colors and design surround the inside of the Moravian redware bowl form a floral design wreath. The Moravian redware bowl has flared sides and is incised on the outer rim.
