DESCRIPTION: These are a hand turned bird’s eye maple wooden dough bowl from New England circa early 1800s from New England, circa 1700s. Large wooden dough bowls were the workhorse in early American kitchens and not decorative pieces. A dough scraper was a useful tool in the early colonial home. It was usually a long, rectangular hand wrought piece of iron that was secured with a wooden handle.The wooden dough bowl was made from a single piece bird’s eye maple, which grows in New England. The bird’s eye maple dough bowl is beehive shaped, and has a large flat base for resting. The outside of the bird’s eye maple dough bowl has inactive wormholes and some scarring due decades of use. Shellac was used commonly as a protective coating for baskets and treen from the elements. The bird’s eye maple dough bowl has a light coating of shellac. The inside of the bird’s eye maple dough bowl has lots of scars from use of almost two centuries!
