DESCRIPTION: This is a rare "Heart" cut out wrought iron food chopper from Berks County, Pennsylvania, circa 1800s. Berks County was an early established community that was well known for their exceptionally fine workmanship. Many of the early colonial decorated dowers chests came from this area. This is a rare form and is made of wrought iron by an expert craftsman. It most likely was made as a wedding gift that the lucky couple would have cherished and seldom used. This is Pennsylvania folk art at its Finest! The very large heart cut out points inward as a symbol of commitment and oneness. The wrought iron was highly ground polished by the blacksmith and still retains the original luster. The wrought iron is thick, heavy and tapers into a very sharp blade. The handle is hand turned of hard rock maple and is thick and heavy. The bolster that secures the wrought iron blade to the maple wood handle is made of brass.
