This composition in oil on wood is characteristic of the Swiss artist Robert Amrein (1896-1945) and predominantly painted in shades of green, emphasised by the dark tree branches, a fence on the right edge of the picture, a few houses in the background as well as the blue sky and mountains. A woman is seen from the back, strolling through the lanscape in the centre of the lower half of the picture.
The painting is signed lower right, “R. Amrein”. It is in good condition with only minor traces of age. The wooden panel is warped due to age and partial losses of material and colour are visible on the top edge of the painting. Metal hooks for hanging the picture on the wall were hammered into the wooden panel from the back; the tips are visible in the front. The painting measures 50 x 64.5 cm.
Robert Amrein (1896-1945)
Robert Amrein was born in 1896 in Zurich. He studied for some time under Augusto Giacometti at the Florence Academy of Arts and went on numerous study trips to the Tessin (1916, 17, 18), Siena, Athens (1920/21), Paris (1927), Spain and Greece. In 1919 his works were exhibited at the collective exhibition at the Züricher Kunsthaus. Robert Amrein died in 1945 in Uetikon.
