Scenic view with boat houses overlooking the foothills of the Alps; paintings by August Lüdecke-Cleve fetch up to 9,000 euros on the international auction market

August Lüdecke-Cleve created the present work, depicting a picturesque view of the foothills of the Alps, in 1923. Two boathouses are rendered in the foreground. The background depicts the view of the lake. On the opposite shore the silhouette of a small village can be discerned, embedded in the green mountains. With broad impasto brush strokes Lüdecke-Cleve has captured a warm summer day in harmonious colors. Time and time again the German painter captured the changing impressions of the Upper Bavarian countryside in his works.

The painting is in overall good condition. In the center there is a vertical tear (approx. 5 cm), which is backed with a patch of canvas and only faintly visible. The work is signed and dated ‘August Lüdecke-Cleve 23’ in blue lower left. The frame shows light wear. The framed work measures 58 x 74 cm, the stretcher frame measures 36 x 53 cm.

August Lüdecke-Cleve (1868-1957)

August Lüdecke-Cleve initially studied at the Art Academy in Dusseldorf under Hugo Crola and then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Franz Roubaud and Heinrich von Zügel. He graduated his master class with a silver medal. From 1901 onwards, he had his studio in Munich and repeatedly traveled to the Lower Rhine, the Chiemsee and the Salzkammergut. Lüdecke-Cleve was a member of the artist group Laetitia in Dusseldorf, Munich Artists’ Association and the Munich Artists' Society Allotria. He first showed his works in Dusseldorf and from 1908 onwards he regularly exhibited in the Glaspalast in Munich. In 1943 his studio in Munich was destroyed. He then settled in the Allgäu. The painter created mostly landscapes and animal paintings. His late work is defined by representations of cows. The influence of his teacher von Zügel can be seen in his subject matter, use of color, lighting effects as well as the broad brushwork.
