Oil paintings by the Dutch genre painter Philips Wouwerman are ever so popular due to their charming subjects, the skillful rendition and the atmospheric color palette. The oil painting on hand depicting resting peasants in a landscape is a copy from the 18th Century after the Dutch genre painter Philips Wouwerman. The finely painted landscape with resting peasants is rendered with masterful skill. Travelling peasants are resting in the foreground, on the right hand side of the picture plane peasant boys are loading a hay wagon and further figures are seen travelling the wide landscape. Even though the subject is mostly concentrated on the foreground the painting carries a realistic perception of depth. The cloudy sky makes up a great deal of the canvas demonstrating the artist’s skill to convey a naturalistic depiction of atmosphere. The artist’s immense attention to detail becomes apparent in the rendition of the horse or the plants in the foreground. With details such as the dim expression on the peasant’s face or the sniffing dog the painting seems to tell a story. Wouwerman is a celebrated painter worldwide due to his detailed rendition and delicate and subdued color palette. The artist of the work on hand has managed to render a painting that encompasses Wouwerman’s skills.

The painting shows distinctive signs of age. The varnished surface shows craquelure and a hole in the lower part near the horse’s hoof. The stretcher has left and imprint on the canvas. There are signs of framing, such as some loss of color around the rim. The dimensions framed are 48.5 x 42.2 cm and the dimensions of the canvas are 42.5 x 36 cm. The stretcher bares an old label with the name ‘La Roche Burckhardt’, which presumably was a former owner of the painting. (khe)
