This fine hunting piece is the work of Austrian painter Wilhelm Richter (1824-1892) dating to 1878. At this time, the artist often went to the Imperial hunting lodge in Gödöllö near Budapest. The painting shows a young lady in black rider costume sitting on a carefully coiffed and groomed horse. Two hunting dogs run ahead of the rider, while opens a vast landscape in the background.



The painting is signed and dated lower left, ‘W. Richter 1878’. The canvas has been relined. The edges show slight framing marks. There are some smaller retouchings. The skirt of the rider is with a small discolored area. The gilt stucco frame displays some big losses at the front. The overall dimensions, including the frame, are 95 x 80 cm. The stretcher frame measures 58.5 x 73.5 cm.



Wilhelm Richter (1824-1892)

Born in Vienna, the painter Wilhelm Richter was specialized in genre, hunting and military depictions. He studied at the Vienna Academy with the painters Leopold Kupelwieser, and Johann Nepomuk Ender. In 1848/49, he worked as war painter during a campaign in northern Italy, as well during a campaign in 1859. In the 1870s, Richter often went to the Imperial hunting lodge in Gödöllö near Budapest. There, he primarily painted hunting pieces. Today, several of his paintings are on display in the Military History Museum in Vienna. They illustrate those campaigns that Richter witnessed as a war painter.
