The auction record for a lithograph in colors by James Rosenquist, a leading protagonist of the Pop Art movement, is set above 70,000 Euros

This multiple was created by the US-American artist James Rosenquist, a leading protagonist of the Pop Art movement. In his works the artist makes use of image fragments in a complex manner. The series ‘Horse Blinders’ from 1972 consists of the four cardinal points West, North, East and South. The quadripartite series of prints has been created after the painting ‘Horse Blinders” (1968-69), which is located as a donation in the Ludwig Museum in Cologne. This print shows on the left a spoon in a cup of yogurt, with the foil peeled back. From the right a piece of electrical cable enters into that image, however the cable could easily be confused for some sort of paint brush. The work is characterized by bright colors. The mixed media work combines lithograph and silkscreen in colors with silver foil. It is the print number 34 from a limited edition of 85 pieces.

The work is signed and dater lower right in pencil ‘James Rosenquist 1972’, as well as numbered and titled lower left in pencil ‘34/85 Horse Blinders (East)’. The print bears the embossed stamp of the printer Styria Studio Ltd., a tower stamp, a car stamp and verso the stamp of the publisher Multiples Inc. The sheet is mounted on the upper edge on cardboard (reversible) and framed. The color intense print shows the scoop borders on the upper and lower edges. The sheet is slightly browned. The narrow margin on the sides is mat stained. Verso the sheet is heavily browned and there are traces of a former mounting. The frame displays traces of wear. The sheet is 92 x 172 cm in size, the depiction 67.5 x 172 cm and the total dimensions, including the frame, are 103 x 182.5 cm.
